The death toll from a collision between two high-speed trains in Spain has risen to 64, with about 80 passengers injured, 50 of them seriously. The regional government of Castilla-La Mancha announced the increase in fatalities, infohub.kz reports.

Witnesses described the crash as a sudden, powerful impact. "I was working on my laptop when I felt a very strong acceleration and slammed into the seat in front of me. People were thrown from the carriage. We thought we had derailed," 54-year-old Jesús Jerónimo told El País.

The cause of the disaster is still being established. Human error is among the possible explanations under consideration.

The collision occurred just nine months after a rail accident involving the same operators on the same line that killed 46 people.

Earlier today, train collisions were already reported in Spain. It was first announced that at least 39 people had died in an emergency near Urda station. Spanish media later reported that the death toll from the rail disaster had risen to 50. There were also reports of at least 179 people injured.

Kazakhstan's Foreign Ministry also commented on the rail disaster in Spain.
