In the Dominican Republic, a unique rescue operation has concluded: an Italian diver and speleologist survived 15 days trapped in an underwater cave system. The man was cut off from the outside world after an unexpected collapse blocked the only known exit to the surface, reports infohub.kz.
The explorer found himself in a small air pocket several dozen meters deep. He had no food supplies, and his flashlight batteries quickly died, leaving him in total darkness. He managed to survive thanks to access to fresh water that condensed on the cave walls. To conserve energy and maintain his body temperature, he minimized all physical movement.
The rescue team reached him using specialized drilling equipment and diving gear. Medics who examined him immediately after his extraction noted severe exhaustion and dehydration but stated that his life was not in danger. Experts called the case an incredible display of human endurance.
