Next week, the US House of Representatives may vote to impeach Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, the head of the Pentagon. This was reported by infohub.kz, citing CNN.

According to the TV channel, even some Republicans believe that Donald Trump made the decision to start a war in Iran that undermined the Republican Party's support among voters and led to a crushing defeat for Republicans in the midterm elections. "But those historic losses only accelerated the search for someone to blame — and the choice fell on Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. They claim he played a key role in persuading Trump to strike Iran — without developing either an exit strategy from the conflict or a plan for action in the event of the inevitable political consequences," the report said.

Republicans say the defeat was so massive that it could take years to fix the situation. Therefore, it is expected that in the coming days Republicans in the House will vote for a formal censure of the defense secretary. Kentucky Representative Thomas Massie — a Republican known for his critical stance toward Trump — told CNN that he intends to initiate a vote on impeaching Hegseth as soon as Congress reconvenes next week. According to several Republican sources, there is every reason to believe that this proposal will be adopted.

Representative Thomas Massie speaks with journalists after a speech in which he presented a proposal to impeach Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. This happened in the House of Representatives on September 16.

Several Republican officials told CNN on condition of anonymity that Hegseth, as a staunch supporter of the war, exaggerated the US ability to win the conflict quickly and easily. According to them, this is why many in Republican ranks now oppose the defense secretary. They accuse him of continuing to insist on escalation despite the absence of signs that ongoing bombing is bringing Iran's capitulation closer.

The conflict, they say, has turned into a "quagmire" that is dragging the US into Middle East affairs indefinitely, exacerbating the cost-of-living crisis and provoking voter discontent, which led to their protest vote against the Republican Party in the midterm elections. Earlier, preliminary results of the US congressional elections became known; we noted that Democrats are leading.
