The United States has formally filed new charges against former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, according to infohub.kz.

CNN had earlier reported that new charges would be brought in the US against former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. That information has now been confirmed.

According to the publication, a grand jury for the federal court for the Southern District of New York has approved updated charges against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, accusing them of conspiracy to commit torture.

“The defendants Nicolás Maduro and Cilia Flores knowingly and deliberately conspired, combined, confederated and agreed with one another to commit acts under color of law intended to cause another person moral and physical suffering,” the document states.

One of the aims of such actions, prosecutors say, was allegedly “to suppress and punish political opposition, to suppress dissent and to preserve the power and authority of the participants in the conspiracy.”

In addition to conspiracy to commit torture, Maduro and Flores face four more counts: two charges of possession of automatic weapons and destructive devices, drug smuggling and “conspiracy to commit narco-terrorism.”

Recall that explosions rocked Caracas overnight on January 3. Trump then said the US had carried out large-scale strikes, and that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro had been captured and taken out of the country along with his wife.

Venezuela’s Supreme Court ruled that Vice President Delcy Rodríguez would temporarily serve as president. The trial of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife in the US will begin on June 1, 2027, the New York court said.

Maduro recently sent his family photographs from prison. And in September, Maduro and Cilia Flores asked a judge on Wednesday to drop drug-trafficking charges against them.
