The United States has extended an invitation to Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the Group of Twenty summit in Miami, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said, according to infohub.kz.
According to the top US diplomat, Washington maintains that it is necessary to keep in contact with leaders with whom there are disagreements. Rubio also stressed that the United States is open to engagement with Moscow.
"We believe this is an opportunity for him to talk not only with the president but also with other world leaders. We hope he will accept this invitation," the US secretary of state commented.
The Kremlin has responded to the invitation. Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said Russia is grateful and appreciative of the invitation for Vladimir Putin to attend the G20 summit.
"We will decide and work it out through diplomatic channels," he said.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he would fly to Miami to meet with Vladimir Putin if the United States invites the Russian president to the Group of Twenty summit. Later, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said a meeting between Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Miami was impossible.
