Satellite internet is now available in 59 passenger trains in Kazakhstan, reports infohub.kz.
According to the national carrier, Starlink now covers more than 770 carriages. By the end of September 2026, they plan to equip 124 trains with satellite internet, which is 1,235 carriages on 50 routes.
Satellite internet is already working on the following routes: Nurly Zhol – Almaty, Nurly Zhol – Oskemen, Nurly Zhol – Oral, Nurly Zhol – Petropavlovsk, Almaty-2 – Oskemen, Kyzylorda – Semey, Aktobe – Almaty-1, Mangistau – Aktobe, Oral – Mangistau, Aktobe – Kazaly, Aktobe – Atyrau, Pavlodar – Almaty.
KTZ began testing satellite internet on trains in 2025. Starlink and OneWeb were tested on the routes Astana – Almaty, Astana – Oskemen, Astana – Burabay, Astana – Semey, and Almaty – Mangyshlak.
Passengers on these routes are promised a free basic package. The connection speed should be sufficient for messaging in WhatsApp and Telegram. For other needs, the company plans to create separate tariff packages.
"The technical capabilities of the satellite channel provide access speeds of up to 100 Mbit/s. The use of low-orbit satellite communications allows providing internet access, including in remote sections of the railway network," KTZ said.
Earlier, Kursiv wrote about how Kazakhstan continues to work on launching internet in passenger trains. According to representatives of the Ministry of Digital Development, it will not be possible to provide it in all trains – only in modern Talgo trains.
