Streaming in August brings a mix of blockbuster films, new music, series, and games. The Associated Press’ entertainment journalists have selected the top offerings for Aug. 10-16.
New movies to stream from Aug. 10-16 include the Michael Jackson biopic “Michael,” which begins streaming Aug. 10 on Starz after a $1 billion run at the box office. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the film stars Jaafar Jackson as the King of Pop. Critics note it “slides a sequin glove over the pop star’s tarnished legacy,” offering a conventional biopic that highlights his fame.
On Aug. 14, Netflix releases “Don’t Say Good Luck,” a Happy Madison production starring Sunny Sandler. She plays a high school theater student whose aspirations are complicated by her mother’s illness. Melanie Lynskey co-stars.
Also on Aug. 14, HBO Max premieres “Normal,” starring Bob Odenkirk as a substitute sheriff in a wintery Minnesota town. Directed by Ben Wheatley, the film is described as “a hyperviolent Midwestern Western that cleverly inverts some genre standards.”
New music includes “Travis Barker: Louder Than Fear,” a documentary about the Blink-182 drummer, streaming on Hulu Aug. 13. It covers his life from 2017 to 2026, including the aftermath of his 2008 plane crash.
Carly Simon releases “Comes In Waves” on Aug. 14, her first album of original songs since 2008. Simon recently shared her Parkinson’s diagnosis and skin cancer treatment, saying music “gave shape to days that did not always have much shape.”
Becky G returns with “Baraja Bendita,” her first album since leaving Kemosabe Records. It celebrates her Mexican heritage while returning to her rap-pop roots.
New series include Season 4 of “Reacher,” premiering Aug. 12 on Prime Video. Based on Lee Child’s “Gone Tomorrow,” it follows Reacher as he becomes a target after witnessing a woman’s suicide on the subway.
Season 3 of “Tires” arrives on Netflix Aug. 13. The workplace comedy stars Steve Gerben and Shane Gillis, who also co-write the series.
“Lanterns” premieres Aug. 16 on HBO Max. Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre play Green Lanterns investigating a murder in Nebraska. The series draws inspiration from “True Detective.”
In gaming, “Madden NFL 27” releases Aug. 13. The cover features Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams. New features include dynamic weather, short-yardage mechanics, and the “Persona Engine.”
