Powerful flares resumed on the Sun overnight on August 25, which could trigger magnetic storms on our planet, reports the website infohub.kz.
According to scientists from the Solar Astronomy Laboratory, a rapid increase in solar activity has been recorded since midnight: as of publication, three strong M-class flares (the fourth category on a five-point scale) have already occurred.
"An unexpectedly large active center has awakened on the star, currently located right in the center of the visible solar disk, that is, in the area from which direct impacts on Earth are possible. The corresponding group of sunspots has been observed for about a week, but in recent days it showed limited activity and was being written off - it was considered that the center was dead, having spent all its energy. The series of strong explosions that began today refuted this claim," the laboratory stated.
It is noted that there are no direct forecasts yet for plasma ejections towards Earth and associated geomagnetic storms, but risks are possible.
"There are no highest-class flares at the moment, so we are not talking about historical records. The situation stands out on a scale of 2-3 months, but not a year, let alone years," the scientists added.
According to the laboratory, today will be the most significant day, which will make it clear whether the surge will be episodic, short, or will escalate.
