Kazakh taekwondo athlete Tamirlan Tleules has won a historic gold medal at the 2026 Summer Asian Games, becoming the first representative of his country to claim the top continental title in the sport, infohub.kz reports.
In the decisive bout of the under-58 kg weight category, the Kazakh faced Kurt Bryan Barbosa of the Philippines and secured a 2:0 victory.
The first round was tense — Tleules came out on top 16:14. In the second round, the Kazakh's advantage became far more pronounced: he won 15:2 and left his opponent no chance of forcing a third round.
Thus, Kazakhstan's national team has won a gold medal in taekwondo at the Asian Games for the first time in its history.
On his way to the final, Tleules confidently navigated the earlier stages of the tournament. In the quarterfinals, he defeated Iran's Abolfazl Zandiaghouri 2:0, guaranteeing himself at least a bronze medal in advance.
The taekwondo competitions are being held as part of the 20th Summer Asian Games in Aichi and Nagoya from October 1 to 3. Kazakhstan is represented by seven athletes — four men and three women.
For Tleules, this victory marked the biggest success of his career at the senior continental level and, at the same time, a historic result for the entire national team.
Before 2026, Kazakh taekwondo athletes had won silver and bronze medals at the Asian Games but had never managed to reach the top step of the podium. Tleules's victory changed that record and brought Kazakhstan its first Asian Games gold in taekwondo.
