An oil tanker exploded in the Strait of Hormuz after striking a sea mine, according to infohub.kz.
According to the Tasnim news agency, the vessel deviated from the route recommended by Iran in one of the world's most strategically vital maritime corridors before hitting the mine, causing the explosion.
Iranian authorities have not yet issued official comments on the incident. The tanker's name, ownership, and the extent of damage remain undisclosed.
The incident comes amid ongoing negotiations over maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz. Sources told The Jerusalem Post that Iran and mediator Oman have made "some progress" in discussions on the future transit regime through the key waterway.
Among Oman's proposals is the creation of a regional consortium to handle maritime security, search-and-rescue operations, and other areas of cooperation. Sources say participation in such a body would be voluntary.
Tehran, however, reportedly opposes the initiative and insists on mandatory fees for participation, warning that otherwise it may restrict vessel transit through the strait.
