A 44-year-old local resident has been detained in Temirtau on suspicion of stealing money from an Orthodox church and robbing a pensioner of money and jewelry, the Karaganda Region Police Department reported, according to infohub.kz.
Last week, the duty unit of the Starogorodskoy police division received a report about the theft of 143,000 tenge from a church. During operational-search activities, police identified and detained the suspect.
According to the department, during questioning the man confessed to this theft and also told about another theft committed a month earlier. At that time, 100,000 tenge and gold earrings were stolen from a 68-year-old pensioner. The total damage amounted to 300,000 tenge.
The suspect claims he sold the jewelry and spent the money on personal needs. Police are trying to locate the earrings to seize them as material evidence.
As part of the pre-trial investigation, the detained man's possible involvement in other similar crimes committed in the region recently is also being checked. Investigative actions are ongoing, and the circumstances of the incidents are being established.
Earlier, "Kursiv" reported that in a shopping center in the Zhetysu district of Almaty, a girl tried to take goods worth more than 36,000 tenge from a boutique. Store employees called the police, and the girl was taken to the district police department. An investigation was launched.
