American company Tesla is preparing to launch its autonomous taxi, the Cybercab, on the streets of Austin, Texas, by the end of August. This was reported by Reuters. The first passengers will be company employees, after which the robotaxi will be integrated into the existing Robotaxi service, according to infohub.kz.
The Cybercab is a two-seat electric vehicle designed exclusively for autonomous driving: it has no steering wheel or pedals. Serial production of the model began in spring 2026.
The company has already conducted test runs of the Cybercab on Austin's streets and trained emergency services to interact with autonomous vehicles. However, expanding the geographic scope of use is hampered by regulatory requirements. For instance, in Nevada, Tesla hoped to obtain permission to operate 5,000 robotaxis, but so far only 10 vehicles have been approved, with the condition that their operation must be supervised.
Amid preparations for the launch, a video has surfaced online showing a Cybercab approaching a row of flexible barriers, stopping several times, and then driving straight through them. The date of the footage has not been confirmed, and Tesla has not yet commented on the incident.
This video appeared a few weeks after Tesla's head of artificial intelligence stated that Robotaxi is "flawlessly" safe.
Thus, the launch of the Cybercab will be a serious test for Tesla: the company will have to prove that a car without a steering wheel or pedals can safely operate in real urban traffic.
Earlier, the publication "Kursiv Avto" reported that autonomous vehicles will appear in Astana, Almaty, and Kosshy.
