Police in Almaty have detained two suspects in the theft of relay protection terminals from a transformer substation. The damage from the crime amounted to nearly 10 million tenge, according to infohub.kz.

According to the city's police department, the theft occurred at night in the Nauryzbai district. Investigators said the perpetrators took advantage of open access and stole expensive equipment critical to the energy infrastructure.

"During operational search activities, criminal police officers identified the suspects and detained them. Both have been placed in a temporary detention facility. A criminal case has been opened for theft on an especially large scale," the police department said.

According to the investigation, the suspects' involvement is confirmed by witness testimony, CCTV footage, and other case materials. The investigation continues as police work to recover the stolen equipment.

Earlier, Kursiv reported that five Kazakhstani citizens stole copper from trains heading to China. The court sentenced them to 2.5 years of restricted freedom.
