Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed key bilateral issues, including the construction of Kazakhstan's first nuclear power plant, during the 22nd Forum of Interregional Cooperation in Omsk, reports website infohub.kz.
Thanking Putin for the warm reception, Tokayev stressed the importance of sustained dialogue on major areas of Kazakh-Russian cooperation. "We are very large trading partners. In 2025, trade volume reached about $28 billion, and the trend this year is extremely positive. Compared to the first five months of 2025, these five months showed good growth in bilateral trade. As for investments, Russia ranks first among investors in our economy. Investment volume has reached nearly $30 billion. Notably, through our joint efforts, we selected a pool of 177 promising industrial projects, of which 122 have already been implemented. The total value of these 177 projects is $53 billion. This is a significant amount given the current difficult geopolitical conditions," the Kazakh president said.
Tokayev also praised humanitarian cooperation, expressing gratitude for Russian support in opening a branch of Kazakh National University in Omsk. He confirmed progress on the joint project to build Kazakhstan's first nuclear power plant.
"I have been informed that field work at the site near Lake Balkhash is wrapping up. This project is not only about generating a new type of energy in Kazakhstan. It is a project that will bring our states closer, and most importantly, the peoples of our countries, particularly the younger generation. We are talking about training local Kazakh technical personnel with Russia's help, so that they can later work in this very complex field, which is the nuclear industry," Tokayev said.
