An 18-year-old tourist, Lucas Ranger, was detained at an airport in Thailand after police allege he stole someone else's watch. The young man was arrested before his flight and denied bail, reports the website infohub.kz, citing NEWS.ru.
Ranger himself claims he had no intention of stealing: he mistakenly took the watch that was lying next to his personal belongings. The tourist's mother said that at the time her son was feeling unwell after a long sea voyage and called his incarceration in a Thai prison excessively harsh.
Under local laws, the young man faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to 10,000 baht.
Ranger's lawyer is already seeking a review of the case. As compensation to the watch owner, he paid $1,000, although the watch itself, according to the publication, is worth about $100.
The tourist remains in custody, and his fate will be decided by Thai authorities.
