US President Donald Trump has voiced support for the unification of Northern Ireland with the Republic of Ireland. He made the statement during a meeting with the head of the Irish government, according to infohub.kz.
As reported by Bild, during talks with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin in Dublin, the American leader told journalists that unification "will ultimately happen" and that he would "very much welcome" such a scenario.
The British government rejected this position. London said that the course of Prime Minister Andy Burnham remains unchanged and that a referendum on Northern Ireland's exit from the United Kingdom is not currently being considered.
The largest unionist party in Northern Ireland, the DUP, also opposed the idea. Its leader, Gavin Robinson, said that the future of the region should be determined by the people of Northern Ireland themselves, not by politicians in London, Dublin, or Washington.
The issue, as noted in the report, remains particularly sensitive due to the 1998 Belfast Agreement, which ended decades of conflict between nationalists and unionists. Under the agreement, only the British government can call a referendum on Northern Ireland's constitutional status.
