US President Donald Trump has expressed confidence that Washington and Tehran will reach a deal immediately after the US midterm congressional elections, infohub.kz reports.
According to RIA Novosti, the American leader believes Iran is deliberately waiting for the congressional vote results, after which the two sides will reach an agreement.
"I believe we'll make a deal (with Iran — ed.) right after the elections, because it simply makes no sense for them to do otherwise. They're waiting to see my results in the midterms. But they don't understand one thing — I'm not on the ballot," Trump said from the podium of the United Nations General Assembly.
The White House occupant also stressed that he will have to decide whether to strike a deal with Iran or "wipe it off the face of the earth" entirely.
"I have a big decision to make: whether a deal will be made with Iran that lets it recover and build a country far greater than ever before... Or destroy the Islamic Republic, and do it fast," Trump added.
As RBC writes, the US midterm elections will be held on November 3, 2026. All 435 members of the House of Representatives and about a third of the Senate will be elected. The vote will determine which party controls each chamber of Congress over the next two years.
Recall that Donald Trump earlier spoke of a decisive moment in the conflict with Iran, saying the end of the war was approaching soon. Iran, for its part, warned of a harsh response in the event of a new US attack.
