Trump and Xi Wrap Up Washington Summit with Tea, No Deal Details

U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping spent three days in Washington discussing trade and other contentious bilateral issues, but the American side says it will only release the specifics of any agreements on Monday, according to infohub.kz.

On the final day of the summit, the leaders drank tea at the White House. Trump spoke of progress in the talks and indicated that China would expand access for American agricultural products to its market, without giving specific terms.

"I think our farmers will be happy," the U.S. president said.

Xi, for his part, described relations with the United States as constructive and said they are developing on the basis of respect, fairness and reciprocity.

On trade agreements, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the sides had decided to remove some goods from trade disputes. He mentioned shipments of American agricultural products and medical equipment to China, as well as imports of consumer and other goods into the United States. Greer promised to publish details of the agreements on Monday.

Trump also spoke of expanding access for American farmers and ranchers to the Chinese market. Both leaders named artificial intelligence as a possible area of cooperation.

Separately, Xi urged the United States to approach the Taiwan issue cautiously. Beijing is also seeking an end to American arms supplies to the island. In December, the Trump administration approved an $11 billion weapons package, but a decision on another package worth about $14 billion has been postponed.

After tea, Trump showed Xi the U.S. National Archives. There the leaders viewed the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. According to Xi, he and Trump may meet twice more before the end of the year — at the APEC summit in China and the G20 in Miami.

Earlier, Kursiv reported how Xi's plane landed on September 23 at Andrews Air Force Base near Washington. The Chinese leader, who arrived in the United States on a state visit, and his wife Peng Liyuan were greeted at the gangway by President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. The sides were reported to have agreed to extend the trade truce.
