Kazakhstan has completed a key stage of laying the Trans-Caspian fiber-optic communication line (FOCL) along the Caspian Sea floor, connecting Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan with a digital artery, reports infohub.kz.
The submarine cable has reached the coast of Kazakhstan, marking the completion of the most challenging part of the project. The implementation is carried out by Kazakhtelecom and AzerTelecom International. The new Aktau-Sumgait route will become a direct high-speed data transmission corridor between Asia and Europe. The project aims to enhance the reliability of international communications and strengthen the transit potential of both countries.
Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of AI and Digital Development Zhaslan Madiev, head of Kazakhtelecom Bagdat Musin, and CEO of AzerTelecom International Ana Nakashidze inspected the progress of the marine phase from the cable-laying vessel.
"The new route will strengthen Kazakhstan's digital connectivity with global data networks and create a foundation for further development of AI, cloud technologies, and modern data centers," noted Zhaslan Madiev.
Currently, the cable is being connected to the shore infrastructure. In autumn, it is planned to complete the construction of the terrestrial infrastructure, conduct commissioning works, and test the system. CaspiLink B.V., a joint venture of Kazakhtelecom and AzerTelecom International, will be responsible for the construction and further operation of the backbone.
The project started in 2025. First, specialists conducted engineering surveys, determined the optimal route, and tested the cable. The marine laying began in July 2026. The work was carried out around the clock using a specialized vessel with a displacement of over 20,000 tons. Seventy specialists were involved in the project.
The project is financed from the operators' own funds without attracting budget funding.
