U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed 50% tariffs on goods from Canada, signing the corresponding documents, according to the White House website, as reported by infohub.kz.
The 50% tariffs on a range of Canadian products are in response to what the U.S. considers discriminatory treatment of American goods by Canada. The tariffs will take effect 30 days after signing.
"President Trump is taking action to compensate for the damage that Canadian policies are causing to U.S. trade and to ensure a level playing field for key U.S. export products — automobiles, alcoholic beverages, and dairy products," the statement said.
The tariffs apply to all covered goods regardless of whether they fall under the terms of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement. The new tariffs will not apply to energy resources, potash fertilizers, goods already subject to tariffs (under Section 232), and certain other categories, including fish and critical minerals.
"The Trump administration says the president is taking steps to hold Canada accountable for continued discrimination and unfair treatment of U.S. trade, which the White House believes harms American workers and companies," the statement said.
Recently, Trump demanded that Canada take more active measures to combat wildfires and threatened to impose new tariffs.
