U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to temporarily suspend tariffs on foreign beef has sparked criticism from within his own party. The move, aimed at lowering food prices, has alarmed senior Republicans who warn it could hurt American farmers, reports infohub.kz.
The president announced that the U.S. will import up to 300,000 metric tons of foreign beef without charging higher tariffs. This decision has drawn concern from some high-ranking Republicans, who caution that "flooding" the domestic market with imports could harm American producers.
The Trump administration claims it has secured a commitment that imported beef will be sold at 25% below "current market prices." Trump stated: "This deal will reduce prices for Americans while giving space for our Great American Beef Herd to grow again."
However, many party members have issued rare rebukes of the new policy. Senator John Barrasso of Wyoming wrote: "Americans want US beef on the table – not foreign imports. Wyoming ranchers produce the highest quality beef in the world. They don’t ask for special treatment; they simply want a fair marketplace. It needs to be easier – not harder – for Wyoming ranchers to feed America."
Congresswoman Ashley Hinson of Iowa said: "I absolutely want to see those prices come down, but this isn’t the way to do that." In an interview with Fox News, she added: "We need to focus on letting our cattlemen grow their herd... it takes time and resources, so we should let market conditions do what they do – demand for beef is still really high."
Republicans from other major cattle states also criticized the decision. Senator Pete Ricketts of Nebraska stated: "Short-term policy shifts do not equal long-term solutions. Flooding the market with lower quality beef compromises Nebraska farmers and ranchers. They should be enabled to grow herd sizes and meet consumer demand."
Another Trump loyalist, Senator Tim Sheehy of Montana, said he had advised the president "against this course of action for a year." While acknowledging Trump's "heart is in the right place on wanting lower prices for the American people," Sheehy argued the action would make it harder for American ranchers to rebuild their herds, most of whom, he said, are "MAGA Republicans."
