U.S. President Donald Trump sharply criticized Canada's leadership, calling Canadian politicians "clowns" and threatening a serious deterioration in economic relations, according to infohub.kz.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, the American leader said the United States will always surpass Canada in all key metrics and emphasized Ottawa's dependence on Washington. According to him, without U.S. support, Canada would not be able to exist, as it is the American side that ensures its financial well-being.
The trigger for such harsh remarks was comments by Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who criticized the U.S. administration amid escalating trade disputes between the two countries.
The U.S. president accused Canadian leadership of incompetence and warned that Ottawa can no longer expect preferential treatment from the U.S., which is crucial for its survival. Trump also urged Canadian authorities to "get their act together," adding that otherwise "the consequences for Canada will be much worse."
As foreign media reported, the new wave of criticism came right after the collapse of trade talks in late August 2026. As a result, Washington imposed 50% tariffs on Canadian goods worth about $20 billion. Trump also said Canada has for years levied huge tariffs on American farmers and "wants to enjoy the benefits of being a U.S. state without being one." In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called the U.S. actions a miscalculation and promised retaliatory measures.
