President Donald Trump is considering nominating FIFA President Gianni Infantino as the next United Nations Secretary-General, according to a report by the New York Post, as cited by infohub.kz.
The New York Post, citing a source close to the U.S. leader, reported that the 56-year-old Infantino grew close to Trump during preparations for the World Cup. The FIFA chief actively sought to win over Trump and involved him in various events. In December last year, Infantino presented Trump with FIFA's first-ever Peace Award.
The source said Trump views Infantino as a globally respected figure with a unique ability to unite people. The election of the next UN Secretary-General will take place in 2026, replacing António Guterres, who will leave the post at the end of December.
