President Donald Trump said the next World Cup should again be awarded to the United States, but this time without Canada and Mexico. According to him, China could be the second host country. The proposal was made during a meeting with FIFA President Gianni Infantino in New York, according to the website infohub.kz.
“Next time you should choose the United States again. This time we are ready to host the World Cup without Canada and Mexico. I was very generous then and allowed them to join. Now let’s do this: we’ll do without them, choose ourselves, and next time invite someone else,” Trump said, as reported by the Associated Press.
The US leader noted that Infantino allegedly supported the idea and proposed co-hosting the future tournament with China. In Trump’s view, such a decision would allow teams to have “short flights between matches.” During the press conference, the FIFA president called the 2026 World Cup “the greatest World Cup of all time” and thanked Trump for supporting the tournament. In response, the White House chief said the global championship was “the most successful sporting event, perhaps in human history,” adding that the US proved to be a much more football-mad country than he had expected.
Trump also thanked Infantino for lifting the suspension of US forward Folarin Balogun, calling it “a great decision.” On July 19, Trump is expected to attend the 2026 World Cup final in East Rutherford, where Argentina and Spain will meet. After the match, the US president is to present the winner with the main trophy.
According to the already approved FIFA calendar, the 2030 World Cup will be hosted by Morocco, Portugal, and Spain, with one match each in Uruguay, Paraguay, and Argentina. The 2034 tournament will be held in Saudi Arabia. The next available cycle for the US to bid for as host is the 2038 World Cup.
