Strong ties with loved ones are the key factor in emotional well-being, while rising income after basic needs are met has almost no effect on happiness, infohub.kz reports.
A group of 13 leading international experts with more than 600 years of combined research experience pooled their scientific knowledge and personal observations in a large-scale study for the Journal of Happiness Studies. The experts concluded that satisfaction with life is shaped by a whole complex of factors, but having at least one reliable person nearby is the most accurate predictor of lasting well-being. Based on these findings, many of the study's authors began deliberately devoting more time to family and friends.
The scientists stressed, however, that happiness does not mean constant euphoria or the absence of hardship. True well-being is built on the ability to cope with adversity, living in line with one's values and useful daily habits. Among these, the experts singled out volunteering, noticing pleasant moments and a regular practice of gratitude. Rising earnings provide support only up to a certain level, and further increases in income no longer make people noticeably happier.
The researchers also noted that inner well-being largely depends on a person's own choices. While external conditions and status determine only about 10% of our state, conscious actions and deeds may account for 40%. In addition, happy people show a greater genuine desire to care for those around them and help society. According to the authors, generosity strengthens social ties and benefits both sides.
