Ukraine's accession to the European Union in early 2027 is impossible, EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos said, commenting on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's intentions, according to infohub.kz.
"The date of January 1, 2027 was set by President Zelensky. Accession is based on the merit principle: it is obvious that this date is impossible," she was quoted as saying in an interview with Corriere della Sera.
According to Marta Kos, due to the changing geopolitical situation, for many countries, not only Ukraine, EU accession has become a priority task. She stressed that no candidate has privileges in the accession process. At the same time, the commissioner called for taking into account the situation in which Ukraine finds itself. "And that is precisely why we must help it," Kos added.
The EU commissioner also expressed hope that as many clusters of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the European Union as possible will be opened by the end of this year.
Recall that earlier this year, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the country plans to join the European Union and intends to do so as early as 2027. He also demanded that a precise date for accession to the union be written into a peace agreement.
In June, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that all EU countries had approved the start of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the European Union.
