The upgraded Zhibek Zholy customs post on the Kazakhstan-Uzbekistan border is set to open in August, according to infohub.kz.
Reconstruction of the facility began in May last year. Construction of utility networks is now fully complete, with exterior finishing works underway. After modernization, the complex's area has doubled. Previously, the checkpoint could handle up to 30,000 passengers per day; after reopening, that figure will rise to 70,000.
The cost of reconstruction exceeded 11 billion tenge.
Once the upgraded complex is commissioned, crossing times on the Kazakh-Uzbek border are expected to shorten. The checkpoint will continue to serve only passenger traffic.
According to Askar Aynamkulov, head of the Zhibek Zholy customs post, "Two separate buildings have been built so that traffic flows do not intersect. All processes will be as streamlined as possible, and the facility itself will meet modern requirements and international standards. After commissioning, the checkpoint will be able to handle up to 2,000 cars and 200 buses daily."
