The team from Ural State Mining University (UGGU) in Yekaterinburg, competing under the FIDE flag, won the World University Chess Championship held in Almaty. The Kazakh team from the Kazakh National University of Sports took bronze medals, according to infohub.kz.
In the final match against Saint Louis University (USA), six of the eight games ended in draws. The decisive contribution came from International Master Lia Garifullina, who defeated US Women's Grandmaster Talia Cervantes-Landeiro twice.
The match for third place was a highlight of the tournament. After losing to the Americans in the first round, the Kazakh players took revenge in the second. The main time ended in a draw – 4:4, and the blitz also failed to produce a winner – 2:2. In the Armageddon super-blitz, Kazybek Nogerbek defeated Indian Grandmaster Aditi Samant, securing the bronze medal for his team.
The tournament was organized by FIDE together with the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kazakhstan Chess Federation, and the Almaty city administration. The general partners were the Freedom group of companies and the Shapagat corporate fund.
The total prize fund was 50,000 euros. The champions received 25,000 euros, the US runners-up 15,000 euros, and the bronze medalists from Kazakhstan 10,000 euros.
