A law enforcement officer in Uralsk has stood trial on charges of abuse of official powers, the website infohub.kz reports.
According to the official Telegram channel of the courts of the West Kazakhstan Region, the Uralsk City Court heard a criminal case against a defendant charged under Part 2-1 of Article 361 of the Criminal Code.
"The defendant, as a law enforcement officer holding a position in the department for educational and socio-psychological work among convicts at the West Kazakhstan Region penal enforcement institution, used his official powers contrary to the interests of the service in order to obtain a benefit for another person," the court said.
It was established that from February 9 to March 3, 2026, the officer, who was in a personal relationship with an inmate serving a sentence at the institution, at the inmate's request illegally brought into the facility 10 blocks (100 packs) of cigarettes intended for the convict. For this he received 60,000 tenge.
In addition, from February 4 to March 3, 2026, he knew for certain that the inmate was illegally using a mobile phone on the institution's territory. However, he failed to take the measures prescribed by law to detect and confiscate the prohibited means of communication, did not report this to his immediate supervisor, and maintained contact with the inmate via WhatsApp. In doing so, the defendant created conditions for the illegal use of a prohibited means of communication.
The defendant fully admitted his guilt.
The court recognized as circumstances mitigating criminal liability and punishment the man's having minor children, as well as his sincere remorse expressed in admitting guilt.
By the court's verdict, he was found guilty under Part 2-1 of Article 361 of the Criminal Code and sentenced to 2 years of restriction of freedom.
Pursuant to Article 49 of the Criminal Code, the convict was also stripped of the special rank of "Senior Lieutenant of Justice."
The verdict has entered into legal force.
