The United States and the People's Republic of China have reached an agreement to mutually reduce tariffs on $30 billion worth of goods and to launch a dialogue on artificial intelligence. The decisions were among eight points agreed during Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to Washington, including talks with US President Donald Trump, according to the Chinese embassy, the website infohub.kz reports.
Beijing and Washington also agreed to develop a joint trade council and to extend the arrangements reached during talks in Kuala Lumpur. The two leaders instructed their teams to implement the agreed measures. The published list of the visit's outcomes does not specify which goods will see tariff reductions or when the changes will take effect.
Cooperation on artificial intelligence was a separate item. The two sides intend to discuss the risks and benefits of the technology and to create a communication channel for reporting AI-related incidents. The next round of dialogue is scheduled for November.
On foreign policy, Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump agreed that Iran must honor its commitment not to develop nuclear weapons. According to the Chinese side, the leaders also spoke out against charging fees for passage through international waterways. In addition, the two countries agreed to support each other in hosting APEC and G20 summits.
Xi Jinping's visit to the United States took place from September 23 to 25.
