US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has warned that countries failing to support American sanctions against Iran could be denied access to the US dollar, reports infohub.kz.
According to TASS, Bessent said that President Donald Trump is calling world leaders, demanding they cease all interaction with Iran. He stressed that "Trump is calling world leaders with specific requests to stop engagement" with Iran. Bessent declined to name the heads of state Trump has contacted.
"We're not going to name specific names. We're already seeing some results, and I'm sure the president, as you all know, is very persuasive. In addition to his calls, we are conducting visits and calls from the State Department and Treasury, during which we clearly and explicitly communicate to leaders, countries, and organizations what exactly we expect of them and within what timeframe. And I believe that if there is no response from them, you will very soon see the consequences of their actions," Bessent added.
He said countries that do not adhere to the new US sanctions on Iran will be "effectively cut off from access to the American dollar."
He declined to specify when the new sectoral restrictions against Iran would take effect, noting that the administration is prepared to wait for some time.
Earlier, it was reported that Bessent announced the US is launching the "largest financial offensive" against Iran starting today, calling it "D-Day."
