Peter Kaufman has replaced Michelle Yerkin as US Consul General in Almaty, a position she had held since 2023, according to infohub.kz.
The consulate announced Kaufman's appointment. "Let us welcome the new US Consul General in Almaty, Mr. Peter Kaufman, who has just arrived in Kazakhstan!" the post said.
Yerkin, who started her work in Kazakhstan in August 2023, is married to Zhomart, a native of Almaty, and they have four children. She is fluent in Russian and Spanish and is studying Kazakh.
The consulate's page published a video in which Yerkin thanked the country's residents in Kazakh for their joint work.
In early 2025, it was reported that Majilis deputies at a plenary session had taken up a draft law providing for the lease of a land plot in Almaty to the US for the construction of consulate facilities.
