The draw for the US Open tennis tournament, the final Grand Slam of the year, took place in New York. Kazakhstan's tennis representatives have learned their first opponents in the singles draw, reports infohub.kz.
World No. 2 Elena Rybakina, who withdrew from mixed doubles due to an Achilles injury, will face American Thea Froding (ranked 580th), who received a wildcard from the organizers, in the first round. Yulia Putintseva (80) will start against Swiss Belinda Bencic (12), a mixed doubles finalist.
Alexander Bublik (16) will take on American Jeffrey Wolf (248) at the start, while Alexander Shevchenko (97) will face Croatian Dino Prizmic (101).
Timofey Skatov (205) could have been the fifth Kazakhstani in the US Open singles draw, but in the second round of qualifying he lost to Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov (137) – 6:7, 5:7 (4:6). Earlier, the native of Petropavlovsk defeated Belgian Gilles-Arnaud Bailly (240) – 6:4, 6:2.
The doubles and junior draws involving Kazakhstani players will be announced later.
The mixed doubles competition, held in a new format for the second year, was won by Czech players Karolina Muchova and Jakub Mensik, who defeated the Swiss-Italian duo of Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli in today's final – 6:3, 1:6, 10:6.
The US Open is an annual hard-court Grand Slam tournament. It is the last of the four majors in the calendar year.
For the second consecutive year, the US Open, first held in August 1881, starts a week earlier due to the rescheduled mixed doubles event. The total prize money of $108 million is a record for the majors.
Since 1978, matches have been held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.
The defending men's champion is Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz (3), who defeated Jannik Sinner in last year's final with a score of 6:2, 3:6, 6:1, 6:4. Incidentally, the Italian, the world No. 1, withdrew from the 2026 US Open due to a knee injury.
In the women's draw, Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka became the champion in 2025. In the final, she defeated Amanda Anisimova of the USA – 6:3, 7:6 (7:3).
