The influx of used cars into Kazakhstan continues: in 2025, nearly one in four imported passenger cars turned out to be pre-owned, with most over five years old. Low prices can hide technical and legal risks, experts warn, reports inbusiness.kz.
Buying a foreign used car often seems like a bargain: lower price, richer equipment, and wider selection than the local market. But the attractive cost may mask serious wear, tampered mileage, hidden accident damage, or legal issues—from foreign registration to missing customs clearance. These problems often surface only after the purchase.
The scale of the issue is backed by statistics: according to the State Revenue Committee of the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Kazakhstan, 158,300 passenger cars were imported into the country in 2025 (excluding snowmobiles, ATVs, and similar vehicles).
Of these, 38,400 (24.3%) were used cars older than three years. Meanwhile, 36,400 cars were over five years old, and 33,200 were over seven years old.
Experts stress that the growing volume of used car imports demands extra caution from buyers. Before purchasing, it is essential to thoroughly check the technical condition, legal status, and vehicle history to avoid unexpected costs and registration problems.
