The death toll from two earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24 has reached 4,930, reports the website infohub.kz.
According to Jorge Rodriguez, president of the country's National Assembly, the number of fatalities increased by 101 since July 15. The number of injured remains at 16,740, a figure unchanged since July 5. Some 17,907 people are still homeless, while another 21,210 residents are housed in 107 temporary camps.
The earthquakes damaged 856 buildings, of which 190 were completely destroyed. These figures have not been updated since July 4. International organizations, including the United Nations, give higher estimates, suggesting up to 2,500 buildings may have been damaged. Satellite analysis by NASA indicates that up to 60,000 structures could have been affected.
Venezuelan authorities have not published official data on the number of missing persons. According to estimates by the International Rescue Committee and the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, up to 50,000 people may be missing. A state of emergency was declared in the country after the devastating earthquakes on June 24.
