Kazakhstan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Prosecutor General's Office have reopened the criminal investigation into the death of 22-year-old Veronica Sokolova, who fell from a fourth-floor window of the Almaty Towers residential complex. The case is now being investigated under two articles — incitement to suicide and abuse of power, reports infohub.kz.
The tragedy occurred on the night of June 12-13, 2024, in Almaty. Sokolova, originally from a village near Uralsk, was on a first date with a young man in an apartment at the elite residential complex. She died after falling from a height. Initially, investigators classified the incident as a domestic conflict, and a year and a half later, the criminal case was completely closed.
The family of the deceased strongly disagreed with the police's official version. The mother, Lyubov Sokolova, along with lawyers, sought a review of the case, appealing to law enforcement agencies and publicly detailing the tragedy on social media.
"My daughter could not have simply fallen. She was helped to die," Lyubov Sokolova is convinced.
Widespread public outcry prompted the Interior Ministry and the Prosecutor General's Office to take the case under control and overturn the decision to close it. As part of the new investigation, law enforcement has ordered additional forensic examinations.
