Owners of cars from Eurasian Economic Union countries that are on temporary registration in Kazakhstan will have to decide their fate after the five-year period ends. One option is to legalize the vehicle after temporary registration with primary registration for 200,000 tenge, reports infohub.kz.
The temporary registration period is five years, so the first passenger cars, minibuses and light trucks registered under this scheme will reach their deadline as early as summer 2028.
What to do after five years
The owner can export the car from Kazakhstan or register it permanently in the country. For the second option, it is necessary to:
remove the car from temporary registration;
resolve its registration in the country of previous registration;
undergo the legalization procedure after temporary registration.
The primary registration fee is 200,000 tenge, and no recycling fee is charged. Additionally, the registration certificate and state license plates must be paid for. To qualify for the reduced rate, the vehicle must meet the conditions of the special regime. In particular, this applies to cars that fall under the requirements of government resolution No. 13.
What happens after registration expires
After the temporary registration period expires, the certificate becomes invalid. Until new documents are issued, such vehicles cannot be operated in Kazakhstan. Driving an unregistered car carries a fine of 10 monthly calculation indices (43,250 tenge in 2026), and the vehicle may be sent to a special impound lot until the violation is rectified.
Thus, owners of cars imported before September 1, 2022, should check in advance when their temporary registration expires and choose their next step.
