Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has signed a document resigning from his position as head of state. National Assembly Speaker Ana Brnabic will serve as acting president, according to infohub.kz.
The previous evening, Vucic's supporters gathered outside the presidential administration building to express their support. Addressing those present, he thanked them for the victories in the 2017 and 2022 presidential elections, after which he announced his departure.
"Pursuant to Article 116 a5 of the Constitution of the Republic of Serbia, I hereby resign from the office of President of the Republic," he stated, and signed the corresponding document.
On Monday, Vucic will transfer his powers to the acting head of state, Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic. Presidential elections in Serbia must be held by the end of December.
As DW reports, in early September Vucic announced the dissolution of the National Assembly — the country's unicameral parliament — and the scheduling of snap elections for October 25. At that time, the main committee of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) also confirmed that Vucic would lead the "United Serbia" list. He would also become a candidate for prime minister if the list wins.
