German automaker Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has unveiled the new ID. California Cruise at the CARAVAN SALON 2026 trade fair in Düsseldorf. The model is the brand's first fully electric camper, based on the ID. Buzz Pro minivan, reports infohub.kz.
The interior features a sleeping area for two measuring 2.03 × 1.20 meters with a three-fold mattress 9 centimeters thick. Also included are ventilation grilles for the front windows, sunshades, two camping chairs, and a folding table.
Specially for long stops, engineers developed a unique California Mode. When activated, the climate system can heat or cool the cabin for up to 48 hours continuously, depending on the battery charge level.
The electric van comes with bidirectional V2L charging, allowing it to deliver up to 2 kW continuously and up to 3.6 kW for short periods. The traction battery can power coffee machines, electric stoves, refrigerators, lighting, and chargers for e-bikes.
The proprietary California App now supports route planning that takes fast charging stations into account. It also supports Plug & Charge, which starts charging without additional authorization at compatible stations.
Externally, the ID. California Cruise is distinguished by special decals, a model badge, and unique seat upholstery. However, this version does not include a full kitchen unit – Volkswagen plans to expand the electric California family with other models by 2028.
"Since its debut in 1988, the Volkswagen California has always symbolized comfortable travel, practicality, and ultimate freedom," the company's press office emphasized.
The camper will be available with both short and long wheelbases. The starting price in Germany is €60,800 (about 32.5 million tenge), with first deliveries to customers scheduled for early 2027.
