A Maine Coon kitten named Erebus Anomaly from the U.S. state of Wisconsin has officially entered the Guinness Book of World Records after being born with 29 toes, reports infohub.kz.

The pet from the city of Kokona broke the previous world record for the number of toes, which belonged to a cat named Jake from Canada (28 toes, 2002). Regular cats have 18 toes: five on each front paw and four on each back paw.

The animal's owners, Kendra Vandenbloomer and Hunter Nett, said the kitten was born in March. The cause of this feature is polydactyly, a genetic mutation often found in Maine Coons. One of the pet's paws has eight toes, while the others have seven each.

To confirm Erebus's uniqueness, the owners had to provide X-ray images. The X-ray was taken after the kitten had pneumonia, which he successfully overcame.
