World Boxing, the international federation led by Gennady Golovkin, announced the lifting of restrictions on Russian boxers on its official website, reports infohub.kz.
The decision was made by the organization's executive committee during a meeting in Glasgow that addressed a wide range of issues related to preparations for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
World Boxing ruled that Russian representatives can compete on equal footing with athletes from other countries, meaning they may display national symbols including the flag and anthem. However, the behavior of Russian delegations will be strictly monitored, as will compliance with anti-doping protocols.
The executive committee also discussed preparations for the 2027 World Championship, which will be hosted by Astana, and approved the calendar for the 2028 Olympic qualification tournaments.
“Today’s discussions and decisions demonstrated significant progress that the World Boxing Federation continues to achieve both inside and outside the ring. From securing venues for Olympic qualifying to strengthening governance, expanding global membership, and preparing for the Congress, we are building a stronger, more transparent organization ready to ensure a successful future for boxing within the Olympic movement,” Golovkin said.
