Yayoi Kusama, the world-renowned Japanese artist and one of the most expensive avant-garde artists globally, has died at the age of 97, according to infohub.kz.
As reported by DW, citing Japan's Kyodo news agency, Kusama passed away on August 14 in a Tokyo hospital. The cause of death was multiple organ failure, according to her museum in the Japanese capital.
Kusama was a pioneer of avant-garde in contemporary art. Her creative work spanned visual art, performance, fiction, and poetry. "She painted until her final days and firmly believed throughout her life that love could save the world," the museum said.
Kusama was born on March 22, 1929, in Matsumoto. From childhood, she experienced visions, some of which she translated into art. In the late 1950s, she moved to New York, where her works caused a sensation at her first US exhibition. She became part of the New York avant-garde scene.
In the early 1970s, Kusama returned to Japan, and in 1977 she voluntarily checked into a psychiatric clinic in Tokyo.
