Kazakh tennis players Yulia Putintseva (world No. 79) and Timofey Skatov (163) lost their matches at tournaments in Germany and Portugal, according to infohub.kz.
Skatov, who lost in qualifying but entered the main draw as a lucky loser, defeated Dutchman Jesper de Jong (98) 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the first round. In the second round, he faced top seed Andrey Rublev (14) of Russia and lost 1-6, 1-6 in 59 minutes.
Putintseva battled in three sets against world No. 208 Elina Avanesyan. The 23-year-old, born in Pyatigorsk and representing Armenia since 2024, took the first set 6-3 in 49 minutes. Putintseva won the second set 6-2 in 38 minutes. The deciding set lasted 2 hours 10 minutes, featured many breaks, and ended 3-6, 6-2, 2-6. Break points were 8-9, aces 2-0, total points won 77-87.
At the Hamburg tournament, Zhibek Kulambayeva (136) continued her campaign. In doubles, paired with Latvia's Darya Semenista (204), the Almaty native defeated the German duo Tamara Korpatsch (165) and Noma Noha Akugue (270) 6-3, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals.
The Hamburg Ladies Open, a WTA 250 clay-court event, has existed in its current form since 1982. Prize money this year is $283,500. Steffi Graf won the singles title six times, Arantxa Sánchez Vicario three, Martina Hingis and Venus Williams two each. Doubles winners include Elena Likhovtseva (from Almaty), Martina Navratilova, Anna Kournikova, Jana Novotná, Mary Pierce. In 2023, the doubles winners were Anna Danilina (Kazakhstan) and Alexandra Panova (Russia).
