Judge Zarema Khamidullina, who presided over a high-profile case in Atyrau, made an unexpected statement during the sentencing, reports the website infohub.kz.

Today, the Atyrau court sentenced Sultan Sarsemaliyev, who killed his wife's relatives, to life imprisonment. After announcing the verdict, Judge Zarema Khamidullina explained the court's reasoning.

"The defendant's mother told the court: 'My son Sarsemaliyev has seen no joys in this life.' But the court must pause here. What joys did Nauryz and Meiramgul have in their lives? Have you considered that? Both lived with disabilities. Their lives ended with particular cruelty. They will never see any joys in life. All their dreams and future were cut short by this crime. They left no descendants. Think about that! The court does not accept the defendant's mother's argument—'My son saw no joys, he fed five children, cared for his sick wife'—as a circumstance justifying the defendant's actions," the judge stated.
