In Kazakhstan's Zhambyl Region, a roof torn off a building by strong winds collapsed onto a woman, leaving her with severe injuries and a Group 1 disability. She later won compensation through the courts, infohub.kz reports.

According to the official Telegram channel of the Zhambyl Region courts, the incident occurred in May 2023 in the village of Asa in Zhambyl District, when a gust of wind tore the roof from a building and it fell on the woman. The plaintiff sustained severe bodily injuries and was classified as a Group 1 disabled person.

In October 2024, the Zhambyl District Court ordered one of the building's owners to pay the victim more than 8.5 million tenge in material damages, as well as 10 million tenge in moral damages. A regional court ruling later reduced the material damages to 4.3 million tenge.

After the case was initially heard, the victim went back to court, saying she continued to incur costs related to treatment, relocation and recovery. She submitted documents confirming spending on medical care, medicines and medical devices, as well as additional procedures. The plaintiff also sought lost earnings of 218,000 tenge a month, since her injuries had left her unable to work.

The Zhambyl District Court concluded that the treatment costs were subject to reimbursement. The court also established that before the incident the plaintiff had worked as a social worker and earned between 189,000 and 218,000 tenge a month. Taking into account her 90% loss of working capacity, the court set lost earnings at 177,000 tenge a month. The defendants are obliged to pay that sum every month until the plaintiff reaches retirement age.

In addition, the two owners of the building were ordered jointly to pay more than 1.4 million tenge in material damages and the state fee. The defendants appealed the ruling, but the civil cases panel of the Zhambyl Regional Court left it unchanged. The court decisions have entered into force.

Recall that in early May 2023 a powerful hurricane swept through Zhambyl Region, with wind gusts reaching 28 m/s. It tore the roof off a building, which collapsed onto the woman and covered her with giant sheets. She was taken to intensive care in serious condition.
