A resident of Zhitikara has been sentenced in the Kostanay region for the murder of his step-son and the attempted murder of his wife. The tragedy occurred in April 2026, when the man, under the influence of alcohol, stabbed his wife in the abdomen and then fatally wounded the teenager who tried to protect her, reports the website infohub.kz.
According to information released by the official Telegram channel of the Kostanay regional courts, the specialized inter-district criminal court considered the case against the resident of Zhitikara. He was charged with murder and attempted murder (Part 3 of Article 24, Part 1 of Article 99, and paragraphs 10, 13, 14 of Part 2 of Article 99 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan).
During the trial, it was established that in April 2026, the defendant, while drunk, during a conflict, stabbed his wife in the abdominal area, causing serious harm to her health. However, he was unable to complete his intent: the woman's underage son ran out at her scream and tried to stop his stepfather. When the teenager attempted to knock the knife out of the attacker's hands, the latter inflicted four blows to his chest, from which the young man died on the spot. After that, the man again tried to stab his wife, but was disarmed by the victim's brother, who intervened.
The state prosecutor requested a sentence of 22 years in prison for the defendant, to be served in a medium-security correctional facility. The victims insisted on a life sentence.
In court, the defendant fully admitted his guilt and asked for forgiveness from the victims. The court considered the commission of crimes while intoxicated as an aggravating circumstance, and recognized the admission of guilt and sincere repentance as mitigating circumstances.
Taking into account the requirements of Article 56 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan, according to which the punishment for an attempted crime cannot exceed three-quarters of the maximum term for a completed crime, and also applying the principle of partial addition of sentences, the court sentenced the guilty party to 23 years in prison in a medium-security facility. The civil claim of the victims for compensation for moral damage was partially satisfied.
The verdict has not yet entered into legal force. Recall that on April 25, a 37-year-old resident of Zhitikara received knife wounds, and her 15-year-old son died on the spot. The suspect—the woman's husband—was detained by police in hot pursuit.
