More than 80 people have died in a ferry accident in Zimbabwe, according to infohub.kz.

According to Al Jazeera, the overloaded ferry capsized in strong winds near the border with Zambia. The vessel was traveling from the town of Kariba to rural and fishing settlements. Authorities said the ferry had a capacity of 90 people, but unconfirmed reports suggest more than 150 may have been on board.

Police say at least 84 people, including 18 children, have died. Search operations are ongoing.

The tragedy is the deadliest of its kind in Zimbabwe. President Emmerson Mnangagwa said the incident has exposed serious shortcomings that need to be addressed immediately.
