Almaty Caps Social Bread Price Until 2027 to Aid Residents

Almaty is continuing its efforts to stabilize the prices of socially significant food items, with a recent agreement locking the cost of basic bread until 2027. This move aims to support residents by ensuring affordability of a staple food.

Social Bread Price Fixed

A contract has been signed between the "Almaty" SEC (Special Economic Zone) and the "ALMATYNAN" bakery complex. This agreement mandates that a loaf of social, sorted bread will be sold for 130 tenge. The retail markup on this bread is capped at 15%, and this price will remain in effect until May 2027.

How Social Bread Reaches Consumers

Under the terms of the agreement, the bakery is committed to producing 3,846,154 loaves of wheat bread using first-grade flour. This bread will be distributed to major retail outlets and neighborhood stores. Some retailers will have the option to sell this product without any additional markup.

Other Stabilized Food Prices

The initiative to keep essential food prices in check extends beyond bread. The "Almaty" SEC is leveraging regional stabilization funds, offering preferential financing to producers, and utilizing forward contracts to manage costs for other key items.

For instance, an agreement is in place with a poultry farm to supply 86.4 million eggs of the first category at a price not exceeding 59 tenge per egg. These eggs are available in major retail chains across the city.

Contracts are also active with chicken meat producers. Whole chickens and legs will be sold at 1100 tenge per kilogram, while drumsticks (golen') will be priced at 1650 tenge per kilogram. Price caps for these poultry products are set to last for up to three years.

Sugar Price Stability

The "Almaty" SEC has procured 4,500 tons of granulated sugar from domestic producers. This sugar is being sold through large retail chains and other stores, with the retail price set at 405 tenge per kilogram. The trade margin for sugar is limited to 10%. These price stabilization measures for sugar are scheduled to continue until November 2026.

It's worth noting that in September 2024, the price of social bread in Almaty had previously increased from 80 tenge to 120 tenge, highlighting the ongoing efforts to manage food costs.
