Almaty is beginning the removal of old tram tracks and concrete supports along Tole Bi Street, particularly near Sairan Lake. This initiative is part of the city's broader plan to modernize its transportation network.

Preparing for a New Transit System

The work targets infrastructure left over since tram services were halted in 2015. According to the Almaty City Administration's Road Infrastructure Development Department, these efforts are a crucial preparatory step for the construction of a future Light Rail Transit (LRT) line.

Why the Tracks Are Being Removed

Residents noticed heavy machinery on Tole Bi Street removing the old tram tracks and reported it to local media. The city administration explained that the removal is necessary to clear the area for the new transit system. The department stated, "Preparatory work for the implementation of the LRT project is currently underway. Dismantling of old tram tracks is being carried out on the section of Tole Bi Street from Sain Street to Utegen Batyr Street. All materials removed will be handed over to the balance holder – AlmatyElectotrans LLP."

Future LRT Line Details

City authorities plan to completely clear the tracks along Tole Bi Street and clean the median strip. This is expected to accelerate the construction process for the new light rail line. Previously, the city administration announced that the first LRT line, spanning 18.3 kilometers, would follow the former tram route. This line will connect the industrial zone of the Alatau district with the Almaty-2 railway station.

The route will run along Baizhan Momyshuly and Tole Bi streets, then continue along Abylai Khan Avenue to the "Raiymbek Batyr" transport interchange. The line is planned to feature 34 passenger platforms, including 12 intermediate and 22 terminal stations. The track gauge will be 1435 millimeters.

The construction of the LRT is intended to be financed through private investment. The total budget for the construction will be determined after the completion of design and estimate calculations.
