Almaty Road Accident Case Dropped: Witness Tampering Allegations Cleared

A criminal case initiated in connection with a high-profile road accident on Al-Farabi Avenue in Almaty has been closed. The Ministry of Internal Affairs announced the termination of proceedings related to allegations of false witness testimony.

Investigation into Witness Testimony

The investigation focused on suspicions that witnesses had provided false information. The Almaty City Police Department had launched an inquiry under Part 1 of Article 420 of the Criminal Code. However, after thorough investigation, it was determined that there was no criminal offense, leading to the case being closed on May 28, 2026.

Reason for Case Termination

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, police found no signs of criminal wrongdoing in the actions of the witnesses. Despite this finding, the prosecutor's office will review the legality of the decision.

Previously, criminal charges had been filed against four individuals in this specific case. They were accused of attempting to mislead the investigation by denying that the driver involved in the accident was intoxicated. However, subsequent evidence, including medical examination results and payment records, led to this particular aspect being separated for separate proceedings.

In addition to the main case, two other criminal proceedings were underway related to the accident:

Charges Against the Zeekr Driver

The main case, which resulted in the deaths of three people, is currently being heard by the Almaty Specialized Inter-District Court for Criminal Cases. The suspect, identified as A.P., is charged under Part 4 of Article 345-1 of the Criminal Code. This article pertains to "Violation of traffic rules, leading to the death of two or more persons through negligence."

The penalties under this article can include imprisonment for 7 to 10 years, along with a lifetime ban from holding certain positions or engaging in specific activities.
